I feel like this deserves more attention...

This is arguably one of the less-spectacular images from !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , so I can’t blame anyone for overlooking it. I try to keep those posts short, I really do. But somehow I always end up with about two dozen entries.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Anyway, I’m spotlighting this one because this isn’t your everyday coolant leak. This is a NEW factory-fresh Dodge Charger, Just Rolled off the Truck. Uploader Clayjay15 confirms that it’s a Pursuit model, but doesn’t specify which engine. I think I see an AWD badge though, so I’ll hazard a guess that it’s a V6?

Minus one cylinder, that is. According to the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! :

Smokey car is was [sic] factory warranty because for some reason one piston was absent...

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

He doesn’t elaborate on how a missing piston resulted in steam spilling out the exhaust, but I don’t think it’s too far-fetched to imagine a piston-less con-rod rattling around and punching a hole into a water jacket. Although I would have hoped that somebody would have heard such a noise and before it managed to get this far...

What about his story about Dodge literally forgetting a piston- is that far-fetched? When asked about a “literal piston not in the hole”, he responds that he has “the picture” to prove it. Hopefully he’s not confusing it with the black R/T Scat Pack on the lift, which Just Rolled into the Shop on account of a hydrolocked engine.

That’s really hard to believe, that they would forget a piston.

Conrods get attached to pistons outside the block so I would be very surprised if it has a conrod in there but no piston.

This is not even slightly hard to believe. But it’s most likely a 5.7/AWD combo.

The new generation 5.7 Hemis are absolutely fucking notorious for catastrophic head gasket failures at zero miles, catastrophic engine failures at low miles, and non-existent QC from the factory.

i dont think tis so hard that they would forget a piston...whats amazing is that someone didnt catch it.

(re: piston: piston inserted VIA robot, and the piston didnt get there on time/wasnt in a batch/whatever. it fell off on the production line, and the robot isnt smart enough to flag it)

either way, this is a VERy serious case so someone having ‘i-dont-give-a-fuck-itus”

You can always tell an it’s an AWD 300/ Challenger/ Charger from a distance because they have the ground clearance and wheel gap of a 4×4 truck, making t hese behemoths look even more behemothier.

Also, that this happened to a brand-new Chrysler product should b e of surprise t o no one.

Because it's a police pursuit hemi awd with a "street appearance" package. That means they have chrome trim and hubcaps to blend into traffic so they can be sneaky or used as detective cars.

Sometimes it’s a supplier issue too.  My old man used to work at a factory that supplied roller rockers for some ford engines.  They had a bad batch go out that had gone too long on the machines before they caught that the tolerances were off too much.  But with the JIT inventory they went out the door and were in engines before they realized.  They didn’t know which ones were bad so they waited till they got installed and replaced the engines as they failed, mostly at the factory.  It was something like 8 enigines they ended up needing to replace.

Is conrod a word? I’ve never seen conrod before today and now the word conrod appears about 5 times. It means connecting rod, right? Wouldn’t pisrod be more accurate? Pisrod, conrod, pisrod, conrod. I don’t know.

Didn’t realize the hubcaps they used for the street appearance package looked like that! Thought they still used those five-spokers from before:

This is why old Mopars are worth so much. It’s impossible to find ones that were properly built and survived all these years.

Also in my experience the service department isn't any better than the factory.

Chrysler is just trying to shave a dollar off production costs, i work at a dealership as a line technician, my area of skill is engine building. and in my opinion most products we sell are meant to break or give problems. The 2.4 multiairs are garbage , our shop has seen several brand new 2018 jeeps that within 2000 or so miles burn a quart or more of oil due to “mis-machining” when they cram the pistons in the block and damage the rings . the 3.6 litres are generally problem childs around 70,000 miles and past that, if not before due to tappets, lifters, and camshafts mostly. Not to mention really cheap cheap third world re-used pot metal chrysler uses to make its “high quality” parts such as its camshafts . I love my job dont get me wrong but its like chrysler doesent even care about its quality control. Even the 5.7 hemis have issues they eat camshafts like no ones buisness. Even some of the new cherokees have tech bullitens from star about water leaks. ON BRAND NEW CARS. The old plymoth chrysler and new fiat chrysler are two vastly different brands. With two vastly different mindsets.

I think that story is a load of BS. every car goes on rolls (chassis dyno) at end of line for static/dynamic EOL test. they plug into the OBD port, start the car, and run it up to about 40 mph so it shifts through all gears in the transmissions, and if there’s any problem or warning lights it gets diverted to the repair bays.

plus, engines are hot-tested before being shipped to the assembly plant.  something must have happened after the car was built and this guy is just your typical internet bullshitter.

Especially sad considering FCAs last five cylinder was actually very good, but then they screwed the new one up by copying VW.

This. I would believe it’s more likely that it wasn’t filled with enough oil or a drain plug was left loose and the loss of oil caused a piston to grenade itself (and look like it’s missing, when it’s actually turned into shrapnel inside the oil pan and crankcase) than a missing piston.
